For the first time in 17 years, portions of Maine are under a hurricane watch as Kyle roars northward in the Atlantic and set its sights on the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

As of 8 a.m. Eastern, the Category 1 storm was about 225 kilometers (140 miles) south, southeast of Cape Cod. CTV reported that the Canadian Hurricane Centre tracked its northward speed at 35 kilometres per hour (22 mph). “On its path Kyle is forecast to pass just to the west of Yarmouth very late this Sunday evening or very early Monday morning just before making landfall on the New Brunswick coast before dawn Monday,” a CHC bulletin said.

Forecasters also issued a tropical storm warning and hurricane watch Saturday for parts of coastal Maine, where Kyle could cause conditions similar to a New England nor’easter. Boston was getting heavy rain this morning.

“Since Saturday, it has picked up in intensity, but it has also stabilized,” Joseph Hewitt, a Maine-based senior forecaster for the National Weather Service, told USA Today. The newspaper has a detailed tracking graphic of Hurricane Kyle here.
